Woolworths: a store of memories | Business | guardian.co.uk

I had no idea Woolworth's was still around. When I was a kid and before Parmatown was a covered Mall, it was a strip store center, and it had a Woolworth's store (or maybe it was a Kresgee store?) Anyway, it was a "dime store" and I remember going in there and all the inexpensive things to be had, like candy. Then Woolworth's disappeared, and I think, disappeared from America. But it turns out it became an institution in England and there were at one time thousands of Woolworth's there. Now it's about to close for good, but might get a government bailout from the UK. See the link for an interesting photo history of Woolworth's, and there is another link for the story.
