GrandCentral To (Finally) Launch As Google Voice. It’s Very, Very Good.

Ok, this is very cool and the answer (possibly) to alot of my problems. I have 4 work phone numbers, 2 work cell phones, 2 home phone numbers, 1 home cell phone, and i need to make it all work together. I NEED this to work!

I'm still here

Hard to believe I haven't written any blog entries in a month. Things have been just too crazy between work, vacation and home. Hopefully I will get back at it and get at least an entry a week up there. Writing in it is a nice outlet for thoughts and interesting things I find on the web, and I feel sort of "bottled up" when I don't post anything. So, another busy day today, but I'm going to try to be more timely in getting some posts up here!

For now, let me just say that if you have an IPhone, you REALLY want the new, free Amazon Kindle for Iphone application that lets you read kindle books on your phone. It is a fantastic application, and now I can keep my reading moving forward in all those little time wasting "cracks" in my life, like waiting for meals at restaraunts or at airports or other places where I dont have my Kindle handy. Between the kindle itself and this new app, I have rediscovered the love I have for reading. It's great!

Elizabeth Gilbert on genius | Video on TED.com

Well, Im a big Elizabeth Gilbert fan. If you have read (or much better, listened to from Audible.com) the book Eat, Pray, Love, then you might find this little 20 minute talk of Elizabeth's at the TED conference to be interesting. I did....

Interesting (to me at least) look at some of the history of Barberton, where I work, and a little bit on my company, Babcock and Wilcox.

Zinio | Home | Digital Magazines

So, paper magazines are dead (mostly). But this cool Zinio site has full electronic versions of a number of great magazines that are identical to the printed versions. You read them with a little program that runs on your PC. Great for me, because I travel all over and can read them anywhere. The image quality is great, you can zoom and search and follow links and print, and it's generally pretty neat. I get PC magazine, and its a great way to read it. They even have some of those annoying little pullout cards like the real magazines do!

Will Hall Music TWiT.tv Audible Book Picks

Im a big Audible.com audio book listener (and you should be too), but one of the challenges each month is coming up with new books to get on my subscription plan (2 per month). Well, there are a number of Tech podcasts (like TWIT.COM) with really smart people on them that have Audible as their sponsor, and the podcast guests usually select a book to recommend. This website gathers all those recommendations up in one place, which is a really cool place to go to get ideas about what people are reading that is interesting.

If you're into browsing astonishing amateur photography, 1x is probably one of the best sites out there. I use it a lot to get "tips" by example, or, if I just want to be depressed about how poor my own photos are by comparison.

Watch Videos of America's Song

In case you haven't seen this video that Oprah's production company did, I recommend it. I think the spirit of service, patriotism, and engagement that the election of Obama seems to have fostered, particularly among artists, is pretty cool. I hope it lasts. Anyway, this, I think, is part of that positive spirit that is in the air.

Twitter / Genny_Spencer

Twitter / Genny_Spencer

This is an interesting "twitter-like" posting stream from a girl that lived during the 1930's. Here is where it came from:

"Late last year, my family found a line-a-day diary maintained by my great-aunt from 1937 to 1941. She was in her early teens, living on a small farm in rural Illinois with her two brothers, one of which was my grandfather.

It's a fascinating account of life in a bygone era, a time when my family's only connections to the world were schoolhouse chatter and a neighbor's radio.

Looking at the terse journal, my sister quipped, "This is the Twitter of the 1930s." We glanced at each other and almost immediately began planning the Twitter account that would become Twitter.com/Genny_Spencer."

I dont normally make alot of political commentary, but check this out. Particularly the video that is included. It's kind of amazing, really, that these things could really come out of the mouth of the President. If I didn't see the video, I wouldnt believe it.

I actually remember seeing this on TV when I was in high school, I'm not sure why it's memorable. Its interesting that the focus of the ad is on how this "small" car can be comfortable, with its "soft corinthian leather". Interesting way to describe a piece of crap car.

Check out the video link above from Dove corporation, and you will never look at a billboard or magazine cover of a "beautiful" woman the same way again.

Also, see a similar treatment that was given to one of my favorite Tech bloggers, Amber Macarthur. Can we all agree that Amber is a nice normal looking woman who doesn't need to be turned into a weird cardboard cutout?

Zimbabwe introduces new $50 billion note - CNN.com

And we think our economy is a mess? How about one where inflation is "231 million percent", a loaf of bread is $25 Billion dollars, and the currency loses close to 100% of its value every day? Count your blessings.

Thought You Should Know - Employee Performance Evaluations

Thought You Should Know - Employee Performance Evaluations

Some very cute phrases that supposedly come from Government employee performance evaluations. I'll have to add these to my appraisal writeups for next year. Hard to pick a favorite, but maybe:

"If you stand close enough to him, you can hear the ocean."

Response from Lance Foods

Remember my post about Lance foods buying the Archway cookie factory in Ashland and taking very good care of the workers there? I got a nice response from the CEO of Lance, here it is:

Hello,

Thank you for your kind words. Like you, thousands of people felt compelled to comment after reading or seeing the CNN story. We heard from people in nearly every state and quite a few soldiers stationed overseas. We have been overwhelmed by the heartfelt expressions of gratitude for Lance?s approach in reopening the Archway bakery in Ashland, OH.

Lance is excited to welcome the former Archway employees into the Lance family and we?re looking forward to getting Archway products back in stores as quickly as possible. Getting room on the store shelves is the key ingredient for getting the plant back to its full capacity and putting more people back to work in Ashland.

Many people said they were looking forward to getting their favorite Archway items back, and others said they had not historically bought Archway, but would do so in the future. We are working hard to regain shelf space in stores and get Archway back as quickly as possible.

Feel free to let your retailer know that you are looking for Archway cookies; this will play a big part in helping us get back on the shelves quickly.

Have a very Happy Holiday and New Year,

David Singer

Lance, Inc

> I just read the story on CNN.COM about what Lance did for the closed Archway bakery and workers in Ashland, Ohio. I wanted to say "thank you" for doing the right thing as a company, and tell you that I will always look for Lance products and give them preference anytime I shop. I have no connection to the town or the plant or any of the people there, but it is great to see a company step up the way yours has. Thanks again for being a role model for corporate responsibility. And Merry Christmas. - Dan Zane
